The meeting of the Beaufort County Genealogical Society met at The Church of Latter-Day Saints of Jesus Christ on 3 June 2023.  President Hill called the meeting to order at 2:00 p.m. and welcomed all of those who were present.  Terry Woolard introduced his niece, and a new member, Elizabeth Piazzi from Augusta, Georgia.

The minutes from the last meeting were read by Secretary Oakley. A motion was made by Russell Tyson, second by Debbie Donnelly, to approve the minutes as read.  Motion carried.

Terry Woolard, Treasurer, reported that the beginning balance in May was $6,712.76.  He made one deposit of $111.35 and wrote 2 checks for the journal printing and one-year post office box rental amounting to $510.08.  Balance as of June 3, 2023 is $6,314.03.  Floyd Bowen made a motion, second by Russell Tyson, to approve the treasurer’s report as presented.  Motion carried.

Corresponding Secretary, Debbie Donnelly, said we only had 2 pieces of mail so far this month.

Book Vender, Louise Cowell, was absent, but reported to the President that she was still working with Lithographics to get her book order printed.  It seems the owner is sick and only has one person to do all the work.  They are behind in printing orders.

Old Business:

• The minutes of our meeting are being placed on the BCGS website.
• Surname project – The membership application will suffice for now.
• Hyde Co. Historical & Genealogical Society meeting: Ted Hill and Russell Tyson attended the meeting.  They reported the program was about Indians living in the area and the shipbuilding that took place.  They talked about the Brickhouse Plantation.  The Octagon house is open for visitors.  Clara Baum invited BCGS to come on a tour.

New Business:

• Victor Jones dropped off the June Journals at the printer before leaving for the NGS Conference.  He will be back on June 5 and pick up the journals.  He requested that the treasurer pay the printer before then.  Chris Oakley will send him the membership list to produce the labels.
• The group decided to take a tour of the Octagon House.  We will eat lunch at Martel’s Restaurant.  Ted will call and set up the tour.  He will notify us by email as to the details.
• Update on Washington Port:  Bids were let to remodel the 2^nd floor of the Senior Center in Washington.  They want to put in a History Museum.  The Board of Trustees is working on the library system with Brown Library.  Ted talked to a couple of members after the meeting, commenting on our concerns about the cemetery card system.

Program:

The program “Some History of the Indians in Eastern NC, 1584-1711” was given by Ted Hill.

The Tuscarora Indians lived in longhouses and spoke Iroquois and Carolina Algonquin language.  The Pamlico Indians lived on Indian Island, and spoke Algonquin and Carolina Algonquin.  John Lawson found the Core Indians at Core Point.  The Croatan lived scatted around Dare Co., the outer banks, Alligator River, Croatan Sound, Roanoke Sound, Ocracoke Island and Hatteras Island.

He told us the habits of other Indians in the area and different tribes in eastern North Carolina.  The talk was very interesting and we learned new things.

April 1, 2023.

The meeting of the Beaufort County Genealogical Society met on 1 April 2023 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at 80 Cedar Circle, Washington, N.C.  The meeting was called to order at 2:00 p.m. by President Ted Hill.  Ladies from the DAR in Cary were in attendance for the up-coming program.  Mr. Hill welcomed everyone attending.

The minutes of the March 4^th meeting were read by Secretary Crestena Oakley. A motion was made by Russell Tyson, second by Terry Woolard, to approved the minutes as read.  Motion passed.

Treasurer, Terry Woolard, reported on the ending balance and that he made a deposit on March 17^th .

Corresponding Secretary, Debbie Donnelly, was absent.  She sent word by Russell Tyson that there was no correspondence this month.

Louise Cowell reviewed some of the books she has sold.  She reported that the sales are picking up.

Chris Oakley reported on the cemeteries she is working on.  She has merged and is continuing to merge the up-dates from Ted Hill and Robin Pendergraft with hers.  A suggestion was made that during the summer this year, her daughter, Trudy Garris, will help her put all the Southside Cemeteries on a flash drive.  Once it is completed, BCGS may want to sell the publication as a flash drive.  That will have to be decided later.

Program:

            Robin Pendergraft and Cindy Foster gave a program on “How to Research on Find a Grave”

website and “How to Become a Find a Grave Contributor.”  There are 226 million graves and memorials on the web site, www.findagrave.com.  They went through the steps to find and record each gravestone name, birth, and death information. Please remember that the contributions are made by volunteers and the data may not be 100% correct, so verify the information. Everyone enjoyed the presentation.

Old Business:

• Approval of By-Laws:  The membership received a copy of the by-laws as approved by the Board of Directors.  Edgar Swindell motion, Terry Woolard seconded, that the by-laws be approved as submitted.  Motion carried.  These by-laws will be sent to Victor Jones, Journal Editor, for placement in the June, 2023 Journal.
• Surname survey:  The form was up-dated and given to Floyd Bowen, chairman of the surname committee.  He will use this form to collect the information for the surname booklet.
• The membership application for the web page was up-dated and sent to Sara Whitford for placement on the BCGS web site.

New Business:

• Information from Hyde County Historical & Genealogical Society:  They are asking us to send a letter to our representative asking that they consider the proposal for the Mattamuskeet Lodge. Representatives are: [email protected] and [email protected].  The proposal comes up on April 1^st and May 1^st.
• BCGS Web Page:  Add the minutes to the web site by sending to Sara Whitford. The Secretary will do this each month after the meeting.  web site: bcgsonline.org
• Journal Articles: we should write articles for the journal and send to the journal editor: [email protected].  We have a June and a December Journal each year.
• Programs for the coming months:  Ted Hill will present a 3-part series on the “History of the Indians and the Early Settlers in Eastern, North Carolina.  Part I will begin on May 6, 2023.

Part II will follow in June with “Some History of the Indians in North Carolina; Part III on “The Tuscarora War” will follow in September.

MINUTES OF THE MEMBERSHIP

6 MAY 2014

Jean Gurkin, President, called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm. Vernetta Lange read the minutes of the previous meeting in the absence of the Recording Secretary, Chris Oakley.  Eleanor Trigg motioned, Willene Brinn seconded to accept them as read with one noted exception:  The time change for the Bath Fest.  There was no treasurer’s report due to the absence of the Treasurer, Louise Cowell.

Willene Brinn, Corresponding Secretary, presented several publications of interest and introduced James Spencer, guest, recently interested in genealogy.  A discussion and demonstration on locating graves with diving rods ensued.

There were no 5^th generation charts presented.  Jean is still working on Cedar Hill, about row 8 or 9.  No committee reports.  Jean provided each member present a schedule of events of the Bath Fest scheduled for 5-17-2014.

Jean requested we continue to think/recommend a new place to hold our meetings.  Some feel our present meeting place is difficult to get to.

Jean received a copy of a Bible regarding Hiram Potter to be included in our Bible Project.

Jean mentioned the Archbell Cemetery outside of Aurora is in dire need of cleaning and restoring.  Willene suggested we call on the boy scouts.  Jean said she will look into it.

Willene said the Hyde Co. Historical & Genealogical Society will meet at Mattamuskeet School on Sunday 5-18-2014 at 2:30 pm.

Jean introduced David French with the Family History Society of Eastern North Carolina who introduced his guests – Kay Currie and Dorothy Little Tugwell.

Mr. French presented an excellent program outlining The Family History Society of Eastern N. C.  He became interested in identifying the nationalities of the original settlers of New Bern in particular and it mushroomed to include all of eastern N. C.  The Society began in March 2910.  Their next meeting will be September 26 & 27, 2014 at the New Bern Convention Center.  Everyone present is invited.  Plus he said pass the word around.  Additional information can be located at www.encfamilies.org.  Phone:  252-349-0405.  The society is at work on a project they call Heritage Park Project.  When completed it will present information relating to all original settlers of eastern N. C.;  native Americans, French Huguenots, English, Scots, Irish, Norse and Afro-Americans both free men and slaves.  He presented several handouts.  Of particular interest, was one advertising a publication entitled Crafting Lives which features African American Artisans in New Bern, N. C.  1770 – 1900.  It can be obtained from UNC Press.

Willene motioned, Jean seconded that the meeting be adjourned at 8:45 pm.

Old Business  & Committee Reports:

5th Generation Ancestral Charts:  No charts were submitted to Albert Everson.  Jimmy Taylor, however, did submit two Bible Records to the society.

Cedar Hill Cemetery:  Jean Gurkin is back working on this cemetery.  Her sickness interrupted her progress, but she is doing much better now.

Committee Reports:  None.

New Business:

Jean Gurkin reported that the sign at the Beaufort Co. Home Cemetery had fallen apart and she had it replaced.  They charged $130 to make a new sign but they put it up for free.  There are 160+ people buried there.

Program Committee: Albert Everson needs help with arranging programs for the meetings.  Gail Manning volunteered to be on his committee.  Some suggestions were made for speakers –Bunyon Keys; Lisa Jones from Chocowinity and Eddie Congleton.

Publicity Person:  Eleanor Trigg volunteered to send notices of meetings and any other publicity needed.

Bath Fest:  The festival in Bath this year will focus on genealogy.  They invited BCGS to participate with answering genealogical questions.  BCGS will be at the main tent.  The festival will be May 17 from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.  Pat Mansfield there was a presentation at the Turnage Theater of Blackbeard – black pirates – in February.  the web page is: blackbeardsloopadventures.org

 Albert introduced Victor T. Jones, Jr. as speaker for the program.  Victor is a Special Collections Librarian at the New Bern-Craven Co. Public Library. He also edits the BCGS Journal.  The topic of his talk was “Researching Your Civil War Ancestor”.  He was very thorough with his presentation of military records, civilian records, published records and online records.  Everyone enjoyed learning all the ways of researching and what is available for research.

The Beaufort County Genealogical Society did not meet in March due to icy roads.  Our next meeting is planned for April 1, 2014 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 80 Cedar Circle, Washington, NC.  Victor Jones, Department Head of the Kellenberger Room, New Bern – Craven County Library will be our speaker.  He will be presenting a program about the Civil War and the records available in the Kellenberger Room.  Everyone is invited to come and bring a friend.
