How It Began

The Beaufort County Genealogical Society was formed in 1985 by a group of local residents with a shared interest in genealogy.

The idea was first brought forward by Leslie House, whose leadership helped guide the Society through its early years. He served as the Society’s first President and remained an active member until his passing in 2009.

Louise Cowell served as the first Treasurer. She remained in that role until December 31, 2009, later returned after a brief break, and has continued to be involved with BCGS in one role or another since that time.

The charter group included individuals from across Beaufort County and beyond who contributed their time, enthusiasm, and research to help establish the Society as a resource for local genealogists.
