In 2011 the Beaufort County Genealogical was fortunate to have Mrs. Lovie Shelton from Washington, NC as our guest speaker. Mrs. Shelton was one of the first nurse-midwives to practice in North Carolina. Her career, as midwife, spans more than 50 years during which time she delivered more than 4,000 babies. In 1998 an exhibit at the NC Museum of History in Raleigh featured a display of her midwifery and a set of her equipment is in the museum’s permanent collection.
She presented a very interesting program while dressed in her midwife outfit.
