The land for the Poor House/County was purchased in 1827.  However we have not been able to locate any records for burials at the County Home until the registration of Death Certificates which began in latter part of 1913.  Louise Cowell and I reviewed each death certificate at the Register of Deeds in Washington, NC documenting each one that was buried at the County Home.  The last person was buried at the County Home was 1942

Whereas the Wardens of the Poor for the County of Beaufort now by an Act of the General Assembly of the State of North Carolina passed in the year One thousand eight hundred & Eighteen authorized and required to procure a piece of land either by purchase or otherwise and to build or cause to be built thereon a house or houses sufficient for the reception of the poor of the County and all bastard & other children that the County are bound to provide for.  Now this Indenture made and executed this twenty fifth day of May One thousand eight hundred & twenty seven between Joseph B. Hinton of the County of Beaufort & State of North Carolina of the one part and William Kennedy, Hugh CcCullough, William Gordon, John  Satchell, William Windly, Henry Harding and Thomas Roboson of the second part, the said parties of the second part being Wardens of the Poor for the County of Beaufort:   Witnesseth, that the said Joseph B Hinton, party of the first part, for & in consideration of the sum of Twelve hundred & fifty dollars to him in hand paid at and before the sealing & delivery of these presents the receipt whereof he doth hereby acknowledge and from the further payment hereof he doth herby forever release & discharge the said parties of the second part, hath given, granted, bargained, sold, aliened, enfeoffed & confirmed and by these present doth give, grant, bargain, sell aline, enfeoff & confirm unto the said parties of the second part, Wardens of the Poor for the County of Beaufort, and their successors in Office, forever a certain tract or parcel of land situate lying & being in the County of Beaufort aforesaid called Bagatelle, that is to say, all the Bagatelle lands which lie upon the North and east side of the main road from Washington to Bath and which lands are particularly described in a deed from Thomas H. Blount to the said Joseph B. Hinton dated May 26th 1817 to which reference being had will more fully appear, excepting & reserving to the said Joseph B. Hinton the smale piece or parcel of land on the South side of said road which said smale piece is also a part of the Bagatelle lands.

To have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land unto the said parties of the second part & their successors in Office forever – to the sole use benefit a& behalf of the poor of the County of Beaufort and the said Joseph B. Hinton, for having his heirs, executors ^ administrators, to & with the said parties of the second part and their successors in office , doth hereby covenant that he the said Joseph B Hinton hath good right & authority to sell and convey the said lands in fee simple, that the said lands are free & clear from all incumbrance whatever that they the said parties of second part & their successors in Office shall have, hold & enjoy the said premises without the hindrance, molestation or disturbance of any person whatever, that the said Joseph B Hinton is lawfully signed in fee simple of said lands and that he will make all such other & further assurances  as may be necessary & proper for the purpose of securing the said land to the said parties of the second part that the said Joseph B Hinton for himself his heirs executors & administrators to and with the said parties of the second part & their successors in Office the aforesaid land to the said parties of the Second part & their successors in office doth hereby warrant & forever defend against the claim or claims of all persons whatever.

Surveying Weyerhaeuser Cemeteries (Click title to see entire file)

BCGS asked for a volunteer to contact Weyerheauser and ask for a map of their properties in Beaufort County with the cemeteries marked.  Albert Everson  volunteered to contact them.  Howard Spence with Weyerhaeuser  (now retired) returned Albert’s call and said he would take us to each cemetery.  We asked for volunteers to go with Howard.  Albert Everson Russell Tyson and Jean Gurkin accompanied Howard to each cemetery.  Bruce Hill from Maryland (formerly Beaufort County) went with us when he was in town.  Odell Parker and Louise Cowell also went with us when their schedules would allow.

Going into areas that are now in remote wooded areas, finding where our ancestors lived over a hundred years ago  and trying to imagine what life for them was like is hard to describe but very rewarding. We all agreed that this was the one most rewarding experience we have had since beginning our adventures in genealogy.

Not only is the Weyerhaeuser property gated so we could not go on it without permission, with only a map we would have never been able to locate most of the cemeteries. We only wish Weyerhaeuser had more cemeteries we could survey.  Many thanks to Weyerhaeuser and Howard Spence for making this such a memorable experience.

We took pictures of each marker and have since published it in a book, Cemeteries in Beaufort County on Weyerhaeuser Property (available from our Book Vendor).  Below are some of the pictures we took while looking for and surveying the cemeteries.

After surveying the cemeteries was completed we invited Howard to one of out meetings under the pretense that he was to be our sneaker.  He did tell the members about Weyerhaeuser and their efforts to preserve cemeteries on their property.  But after this we surprised him with a plaque from BCGS expressing our gratitude for all he did in making it possible for us to do the surveys.

Eborn Cemetery (Click title to see entire file)

Sam-Eborn-footstone-web   When this marker was seen by Chris Edwards while hunting he thought it was a head stone.  When he told me about it I told him I felt sure it was a foot stone and asked him to show me where it is located which he did.  I started probing around in the sunken in place just behind the marker and hit something solid.  He thought I had bumped the casket but I assured him that it was not a casket but the headstone.   He dug down a little with his hands and reveled a small portion of the marker.  We agreed to come back with tools and dig out the marker.  A few weeks passed, he got busy and Albert Everson from BCGS went with me.  We named this the Eborn Cemetery because this is the only marker we have found to date telling us who is buried here.

The Eborn Cemetery is located about 555 feet in the woods on the south side of Cotton Patch Road about a mile down Clay Bottom School Road in Blounts Creek.  Above is a scene of the cemetery and photo of a dead cedar tree located near the entrance to the cemetery.

We visited this site and briefly surveyed it in early spring.  Due to the time of year (snakes and ticks} an in-depth survey was not done.  However, we did count the number of graves across and down and estimate up to 400 graves could be located at this abandoned cemetery now located in the woods and almost totally forgotten.

I led Albert Everson to the location of the foot stone and the place we had determined the head stone was located.  He started clearing the debris revealing the marker. The following photos show the recovery of the marker.

The surname on the marker is spelled Ebarn but all research indicated the name is spelled Eborn.

This is an Afro-American cemetery and apparently was the community cemetery for the area at a time in the distant past.  (Additional genealogical information relating to the Eborn family can be found in the June 2012, Vol. XXVII, No. 1 of Pamteco Tracings, “Who is S. BEAUFORT COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY

MEETING OF THE MEMBERSHIP

3 JUNE 2014

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm on 4 June 2013 by President Gurkin.  We met at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Washington, NC.  The President welcomed everyone to the meeting.

The minutes of the May meeting were read by the Secretary, Chris Oakley.  A motion was made by Willene Brinn, second by Bunyon Keyes, to approve the minutes as read with the corrections.  Motion carried.

The Treasurer, Louise Cowell, gave a report for April and May.

Willene Brinn gave the Corresponding Secretary’s report.  This month she received the NCGS News and High Tides from Hyde Co. Historical & Genealogical Society.

Old Business and Committee Reports:

  1. 5th Generation Ancestral Charts: Albert reported that the pedigree chart for David French will be submitted soon.
  2. Cedar Hill Cemetery:  Jean is still making progress towards completion.
  3. Website Committee:  It was reported that the Bible Records, minutes and some pictures will go on the website. www.bcgs.online.com
  4. Bath Festival: Thanks to Russell, Janice, Albert, Jimmy and Jean for tending the BCGS booth.  We made $10.00.  There was a note from Lee Swain thanking BCGS for the genealogy booth in Bath.
  5. Archbell Cemetery: Roy Archbell will be notified that BCGS is not interested in cleaning cemeteries.

 

New Business:

A motion was made by Louise Cowell, second by Vernetta Lange, to not meet in July and August, 2014.  Motion carried.  There was mention to change the by-laws to say we would not meet during these months for a regular meeting.  A speaker for September could be Eugene Grant, Jr. who has done articles on Blackbeard. Willene will call him and see if he is available for September.  Albert mentioned having Stan White and Hood Richardson to speak.

BCGS will have its 30th anniversary coming up soon.  What do we want to do?  No suggestions were made, so Jean asked everybody to think about it.

Some of us will help Bunyon do the Keys Cemetery survey at Blounts Creek. Date to be set later.

Albert was approached by DSS to have BCGS help locate parents and family.  He will invite the contact person at DSS to come to the September meeting to explain what they would like from us.

Other things mentioned: Eastern NC Family History Fair & Road show with Bunyon Keyes.  We can promote our society on Sept 26th & 27th in New Bern. There will be seminars & classes.  Friday has fees for the classes.  Craven County Genealogical Society will lecture on line – mini civil war programs.

Palatine Group will meet the 3rd Saturday in May and 3rd Saturday in Jan at Olivia Raney Library.

Program:

Bunyon Keyes was the speaker for the evening.  He talked about his book on the black people at Blounts Creek.  His book is entitled: Over Three Hundred Years of Black People in Blounts Creek, Beaufort County, NC, Book I, by Bunyon Keys.  He has spent over 15 years researching information for the book.  It was a very interesting presentation.  Thank you Bunyon.

Adjournment:

A motion to adjournment was made by Russell, second by Odell Parker, to adjourn the meeting at 8:35 p.m.

MINUTES OF THE MEMBERSHIP

6 MAY 2014

Jean Gurkin, President, called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm. Vernetta Lange read the minutes of the previous meeting in the absence of the Recording Secretary, Chris Oakley.  Eleanor Trigg motioned, Willene Brinn seconded to accept them as read with one noted exception:  The time change for the Bath Fest.  There was no treasurer’s report due to the absence of the Treasurer, Louise Cowell.

Willene Brinn, Corresponding Secretary, presented several publications of interest and introduced James Spencer, guest, recently interested in genealogy.  A discussion and demonstration on locating graves with diving rods ensued.

There were no 5th generation charts presented.  Jean is still working on Cedar Hill, about row 8 or 9.  No committee reports.  Jean provided each member present a schedule of events of the Bath Fest scheduled for 5-17-2014.

Jean requested we continue to think/recommend a new place to hold our meetings.  Some feel our present meeting place is difficult to get to.

Jean received a copy of a Bible regarding Hiram Potter to be included in our Bible Project.

Jean mentioned the Archbell Cemetery outside of Aurora is in dire need of cleaning and restoring.  Willene suggested we call on the boy scouts.  Jean said she will look into it.

Willene said the Hyde Co. Historical & Genealogical Society will meet at Mattamuskeet School on Sunday 5-18-2014 at 2:30 pm.

Jean introduced David French with the Family History Society of Eastern North Carolina who introduced his guests – Kay Currie and Dorothy Little Tugwell.

Mr. French presented an excellent program outlining The Family History Society of Eastern N. C.  He became interested in identifying the nationalities of the original settlers of New Bern in particular and it mushroomed to include all of eastern N. C.  The Society began in March 2910.  Their next meeting will be September 26 & 27, 2014 at the New Bern Convention Center.  Everyone present is invited.  Plus he said pass the word around.  Additional information can be located at www.encfamilies.org.  Phone:  252-349-0405.  The society is at work on a project they call Heritage Park Project.  When completed it will present information relating to all original settlers of eastern N. C.;  native Americans, French Huguenots, English, Scots, Irish, Norse and Afro-Americans both free men and slaves.  He presented several handouts.  Of particular interest, was one advertising a publication entitled Crafting Lives which features African American Artisans in New Bern, N. C.  1770 – 1900.  It can be obtained from UNC Press.

Willene motioned, Jean seconded that the meeting be adjourned at 8:45 pm.
